![]() In a similar vein, the surest way to grow a community based on your vision is finding people like you. To avoid that, build something based on your vision and improve on it as time goes on to bring value to both you and the server’s members (in S2C’s case, it was developing channels to support the interests, needs, and culture of the community). If you’re the main admin and you hate being in your own server, you can’t reasonably expect others to enjoy it in the long term. The main point is to create a space you like to be in first. We also have channels geared towards consistently popular games throughout our community, like Squad and Escape From Tarkov. We have plenty of interest-focused channels like cooking, survivalism, history and philosophy, science, cars, and fitness. ![]() With each person who came in, I explained how the server is like a creative sandbox: you’re free to just chill and lurk and play games, but if you’re working on game-related projects or not, it’s cool to share what you’re doing. With him gone, I wanted to recreate that feeling, not just for myself but for the others who found their way to the server. I found those talks to be immensely motivating, and they kept me accountable to my goals, knowing my best friend was in my corner. But when we did, just him and I, we’d talk about our work in our downtime: what we did since we last spoke, what we were working on now, and what we could do to help each other. Naturally, as we got older and started freelancing and following our entrepreneurial pursuits, we didn’t have as much time to game together. In fact, it was how we met so many years ago. Games have always been a means for him and me to bond. Though the outward purpose of S2C’s Discord is to build a community around the website, its content, and the channels it uses to share it, my personal reason for the Discord was to create something that honored the friendship between Heyliger and I. Resolved to continue working on what we started, I re-seeded S2C’s Discord with the friends I made from this other community and reorganized the channels to accommodate the 40-some new people. After Heyliger passed away in 2018, I struggled to be on the server or work on S2C, so I turned my attention to working on another community, though that project was relatively short-lived. Create a Discord You Want to Be InĪs I mentioned, the S2C Discord started as a hangout for about a dozen of us: myself, Heyliger, Colley, Stiltner, and a few other assorted characters we liked to play games with. Either way, if you want to know how we’ve cultivated our success, here are a few tips I’ve learned over the past few years to grow your Discord server. However, this guide is mainly for those with a specific reason to grow your Discord server and keep its members happy. Mind you, if you have a Discord server to just hang out in and don’t really care about its growth, that’s fine. Sure, that concern is legitimate, but it’s easily addressed by recruiting people with intention rather than just taking anyone with a pulse. ![]() In other words, they feared that it would become a large server with acquaintances rather than a close-knit group of great friends. Initially, a few moderators were worried that we’d water ourselves down and lose a sense of intimacy if we brought in more people. ![]() For me, I’ve always preferred quality over quantity, but that doesn’t mean one should shy away from finding more gaming buddies who might enjoy the server. While there are Discord servers much larger than ours, size alone isn’t our primary focus. That means even if some people leave, we still have 12 more people than we did the month before. At the time of writing, we’re at about 485 and still growing steadily at a net rate of 12 new members a month. March 2020 to March 2021 pushed us to 406, another 156% jump year-over-year. Between March 20, we went from 52 members to 261, a 502% increase. What used to be a small server with a few friends has grown to almost 500 members strong. Start 2 Continue has had a Discord server since early 2019. ![]()
